Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that the development of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the country holds immense potential to boost exports.
A meeting on SMEDA’s (Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority) business plan for promoting small and medium businesses was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. During the meeting, a three-year roadmap for SME development was presented.
The Prime Minister appreciated Special Assistant Haroon Akhtar and SMEDA’s newly appointed Board of Directors for formulating a practical and effective plan. He emphasized that SMEs are the backbone of the national economy, and their growth has significant potential to increase Pakistan’s exports.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Sharif directed relevant institutions to accelerate steps for providing SMEs with easy loans through banks and financial institutions. The meeting also included detailed briefings on the challenges faced by SMEs, strategies to overcome these issues, plans to integrate SMEs into national exports, and other measures included in the business plan.
The meeting also highlighted ongoing efforts to increase collaboration with other countries to introduce Pakistani SMEs to global markets competitively. It was noted that workshops have recently been held in six cities to enhance SME capacity, and training programs are underway to prepare SMEs for global competition.
Additionally, steps taken to ensure active participation of women in the SME sector were discussed. The meeting was attended by Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, Special Assistant Haroon Akhtar, State Bank Governor Jameel Ahmed, Chief Secretaries of all four provinces, Azad Jammu & Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, the newly appointed SMEDA Board members, and officials from relevant institutions.
