Punjab Makes Parrot Registration Mandatory with Digital App

The Punjab government has made it mandatory to register pet parrots, and a new digital application has been launched to facilitate this process. The initiative aims to protect local parrot species, curb illegal trade, and maintain ecological balance. The Punjab Wildlife and Parks Department submitted a summary to the cabinet, which has now been approved. Under the new policy, four local parrot species will be legally registered. According to the policy, parrot owners must now pay a fee of PKR 1,000 per bird and register online. Registration is mandatory not only for commercial breeders and pet shops but also for individuals keeping parrots at home. The department says this step will help protect rare parrot species and prevent illegal smuggling. The registration fee applies to four species: Alexandrine, Ring Rose, Slaty, and Plum-headed parrots. Owners who already have parrots must also register them to obtain a license. The registration process will be available through an online portal on the Punjab Wildlife Department’s website, which will go live within a week. Owners must provide details about the species, age, and number of parrots they own. Once the fee is paid online, the owner will receive a registration certificate and license. Keeping parrots without registration may result in fines or legal action. Wildlife experts note that the population of parrots in Punjab has declined significantly in recent years due to illegal trade, hunting, and environmental changes. This policy will not only legalize parrot trade but also organize breeding practices. A department spokesperson clarified that these rules apply only to local parrot species, while imported or foreign parrots are not included under this regulation.
