Pakistan’s 27th Constitutional Amendment Draft Revealed

Islamabad: The federal government’s proposed draft for the 27th Constitutional Amendment has been revealed, detailing which articles of the constitution are set to be amended. According to sources, the proposed amendment includes changes to several key articles, including Articles 160 (Clause 3A), 213, 243, and 191A. Key Proposals: Article 160 (Clause 3A): The government plans to abolish Clause 3A, which relates to the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award. The amendment aims to increase federal powers over the NFC formula. Article 213: A proposal has been made to change the procedure for appointing the Chief Election Commissioner. Article 191A: The government intends to abolish Article 191A and replace it with a new provision, facilitating the establishment of constitutional courts. Article 243: Amendments will clarify that the armed forces will remain under the control of the civilian or federal government. Schedules 2 and 3 of the 18th Amendment: The proposal includes reassigning subjects such as education and population back to federal jurisdiction. Article 200: Proposed changes relate to the transfer of judges. Sources say the federal government has shared the draft with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), and after consultations with allied parties, the final draft will be presented in Parliament.
