Law enforcement agencies (LEAs) in Karachi have successfully foiled a suicide attack plot by the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) targeting the city, rescuing a minor girl who had been radicalized through social media.
Sindh Home Minister Zia Lanjar, speaking at a joint press conference with CTD Additional Inspector General Azad Khan and Karachi Police Chief Javed Alam Odho, said the girl was contacted online by BLA militants, gradually indoctrinated, and prepared to carry out a suicide bombing.
CTD AIG Azad Khan explained that the girl was first contacted on Instagram and later added to a WhatsApp group, where she was exposed to extremist content. She comes from a non-militant family and was using social media like any other child of her age. Authorities intercepted her during snap checking outside Karachi. Because of her age, she is not being treated as an accused.
Federal Information Minister Ataullah Tarar said the banned BLA uses social media to radicalize individuals and push them toward terrorism. He added that timely action by security agencies prevented a major incident in Karachi.
Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry noted that militant groups are increasingly using digital platforms instead of weapons. He urged social media companies to block extremist content and share relevant account details with the government, emphasizing that this is about public safety, not freedom of expression.
