Just hours before the arrival of the New Year 2026, heavy snowfall and rain transformed northern and western districts of Balochistan into breathtaking natural landscapes. Intense snowfall was recorded in the mountainous areas of Ziarat, Toba Achakzai, Kan Mehtarzai, Chaman, Qila Abdullah, and Kalat, covering valleys and hills with a thick white blanket. Meanwhile, intermittent rainfall continued in Quetta, Pishin, Mastung, Noshki, and Zhob.
The cold wave intensified due to the snowfall and rain, with temperatures dropping as low as minus 2 degrees Celsius in several areas. According to the Meteorological Department, the current spell of westerly winds began on the night of December 29 and is expected to continue until the night of December 31. More snowfall is likely in hilly regions, while rain is expected in plain areas.
Ziarat’s famous juniper valleys were completely covered in snow, attracting a large number of tourists who enjoyed the scenic beauty and snowfall. Snow-covered images from Ziarat and Kan Mehtarzai are going viral on social media and are being described as nature’s special gift ahead of the New Year.
However, the weather also caused some difficulties. Traffic flow on Quetta–Ziarat and Quetta–Chaman roads was disrupted due to slippery conditions, while water accumulation was reported in low-lying areas. In Quetta, rain caused several electricity feeders to trip, leading to power outages in different parts of the city.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and adopt precautionary measures during the ongoing weather conditions. Meteorological experts stated that after a prolonged drought, these rains and snowfall will prove highly beneficial for agriculture, water springs, and groundwater levels.
Despite the harsh cold, the snowfall and rain have turned Balochistan into a winter paradise, making the beginning of the New Year memorable with natural beauty and pleasant weather.
