No Leniency For Smugglers: PM

Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif chaired the weekly review meeting of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to assess its performance. During the meeting, the Prime Minister was briefed on FBR’s progress in combating smuggling, tax evasion, and other related matters.

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif praised FBR for its successful anti-smuggling operations and stated, “Every year, billions of rupees of the nation’s valuable assets fall prey to smuggling, but now effective action is being taken.”

He added, “Thanks to successful customs operations, smuggling has significantly decreased, and multiple items are now legally imported and contributing to the economy.”

The Prime Minister instructed that measures against tax evasion should be intensified and emphasized that no leniency will be shown in cases of smuggling or illegal activities. He also directed provincial governments to fully cooperate with FBR in taking action against illegal petrol pumps.

The briefing included updates on the nationwide implementation of the Rahguzar App, GPS tracking of petroleum transport, and the empowerment of district authorities to seize illegal machinery under the new Petroleum Act.

Between July and November 2025, anti-smuggling operations in petroleum products led to an 82% increase in revenue compared to the previous year. Actions against illegal cigarettes, tires, clothing, electronics, and other goods also contributed to revenue growth. Federal ministers Muhammad Aurangzeb, Ahsan Khan Cheema, Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kiani, FBR Chairman, and senior officials participated in the meeting.
