Spokesperson for the Palestinian Civil Defense in Gaza, Mahmoud Basal, has warned that the humanitarian crisis in the besieged territory is rapidly worsening as heavy rains and severe storms continue to batter the area. He said that more than 90 percent of displacement camp tents have been completely flooded.
Speaking to Al Araby TV, Mahmoud Basal stated that the tents are no longer capable of providing adequate protection for displaced families. He stressed that persistent heavy rainfall and strong winds have intensified the suffering of thousands of people, particularly children and the elderly, raising serious health and humanitarian concerns.
He further explained that the extreme weather has exposed the fragility of temporary shelters, warning that relying on tents during the winter season poses a direct threat to the lives of displaced residents and deepens the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
Basal noted that the only immediate and effective alternative to protect displaced families from torrential rains is the entry of mobile caravans. “Caravans could provide temporary relief,” he said.
These warnings come amid a rapidly deteriorating situation in Gaza, marked by continued hostilities, a growing number of displaced people, and the absence of durable shelter solutions capable of withstanding harsh weather conditions.
