Balochistan to Face Drought Alert

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a Drought Watch for 12 districts of Balochistan, advising the provincial government to take precautionary measures in advance.

According to the department, Balochistan’s climate is generally arid and semi-arid, with rainfall that is not only scarce but also unpredictable. The southern and western parts of the province receive little impact from the summer monsoon rains and mainly rely on winter precipitation.

From May to October 2025, the province recorded a 79% decrease in rainfall, along with a dangerous increase in the number of consecutive dry days. This situation could directly affect water availability and soil fertility.

The report further stated that from November 2025 to January 2026, these regions of Balochistan are expected to experience below-normal rainfall and above-normal temperatures, which may worsen drought conditions.

Districts at high risk of drought include Chagai, Gwadar, Kech, Kharan, Mastung, Nushki, Pishin, Panjgur, Qila Abdullah, Quetta, and Washuk. These areas are likely to face irrigation water shortages, potentially affecting crops, livestock, and agriculture.

The Meteorological Department has urged relevant authorities, farmers, and district administrations to take preemptive measures to mitigate the effects of drought, ensure the efficient use of water resources, and intensify community awareness campaigns to minimize potential losses.
