ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday welcomed Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian at the PM House, where the visiting dignitary was presented with a guard of honour by a contingent of the armed forces.
Following the welcome ceremony, PM Shehbaz and President Pezeshkian are set to hold a bilateral meeting and lead their respective delegations in formal talks.
The two sides are expected to sign several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at strengthening cooperation across various sectors. A joint press conference will follow the delegation-level discussions.
President Pezeshkian arrived in Pakistan on Saturday for his maiden visit, accompanied by a high-level delegation including senior ministers and top officials. He was warmly received in Lahore by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and PML-N President Nawaz Sharif.
During his visit to Lahore, the Iranian president paid homage at the mausoleum of Allama Iqbal, where he also received a ceremonial guard of honour.
Before he departed from Tehran, President Pezeshkian expressed optimism about enhancing bilateral trade between Iran and Pakistan to $10 billion. He also reaffirmed Iran’s keen interest in participating actively in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a vital component of China’s One Belt, One Road (OBOR) initiative.
This marks the second visit by an Iranian president to Pakistan in two years. In April 2024, the late President Ebrahim Raisi undertook a three-day official visit, just weeks before his tragic death in a helicopter crash.
