In a shocking medical discovery, doctors in Colombia found that an 82-year-old woman had been carrying a dead fetus inside her abdomen for 40 years. The revelation came to light when the woman visited the hospital complaining of abdominal pain, and an MRI scan exposed the astonishing truth.
According to foreign media reports, the elderly woman had been suffering from persistent abdominal discomfort for some time. During a detailed medical examination, doctors discovered that a mummified fetus had remained inside her body for nearly four decades.
Medical experts explained that this rare condition is known as “lithopedion”, or “stone baby.” It occurs when a pregnancy develops outside the uterus, usually in the abdominal cavity. Since the fetus does not receive sufficient blood supply, it cannot survive. When the body is unable to expel the dead fetus naturally, it triggers a defensive response, encapsulating the fetus in calcium deposits to prevent infection. Over time, these layers harden, turning the fetus into a stone-like mass.
Reports indicate that the calcified fetus weighed around four pounds and had remained hidden inside the woman’s body for decades until its discovery through X-ray and MRI imaging.
Experts say that cases of lithopedion are extremely rare worldwide, with only a few hundred recorded instances in medical history. In most cases, patients discover the condition accidentally during examinations or surgeries for unrelated health issues.
