Pakistan’s Internet Boosts 40% with New Subsea Cablea

Pakistan has taken another major leap in digital development by officially connecting to one of the world’s fastest submarine cable systems, SEA–ME–WE 6.

This marks the country’s third international cable system activated within a year, a milestone confirmed by Federal Minister for IT & Telecom Shaza Fatima, who termed it a significant achievement for strengthening global connectivity and enhancing national internet capacity.

Following Africa-1 and 2Africa cables, this new system adds momentum to the rapid expansion of Pakistan’s submarine infrastructure. Landing partner Transworld Associates (TWA) will initially add 4 terabits per second (Tbps) of capacity, increasing Pakistan’s existing 13.2 Tbps bandwidth by nearly 40%.

The 21,700-kilometer-long SMW-6 connects Pakistan with several countries from Singapore to France. It is among the world’s most advanced and high-capacity networks, designed with 132 Tbps capacity and equipped with 10 fiber pairs.

Pakistan Internet Power Boosts with New AI-Ready Data Center

This system is tailored to support Pakistan’s growing needs in the digital economy, international business, and cloud platforms.

Alongside this development, TWA is also building a Tier-III certified data center in Karachi, directly connected to SMW-6, SMW-5, TW1, and 2Africa systems.

This will be Pakistan’s first data center capable of supporting high-density AI workloads, offering secure and scalable hosting for both local and international enterprises.

The data center will become operational in January 2026, enabling stronger support for cloud infrastructure, enterprise networks, and content delivery services inside Pakistan and beyond.
