Kate Somvongsiri, the USAID Mission Director for Pakistan, has announced the upcoming launch of the $20 million Education Resilience Activity (ERA) project in Pakistan. This initiative aims to strengthen key sectors like education and health, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) and its merged districts. The announcement reflects USAID’s enduring support for Pakistan, having provided over $1 billion in aid since 2009.
Collaborative Efforts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Somvongsiri highlighted USAID’s collaboration with the K-P government on 26 projects spanning education, women’s empowerment, climate change, energy, and infrastructure. A significant achievement includes the construction of over 1,300 kilometers of roads, bridges, and tunnels, which have enhanced connectivity, livelihoods, and economic opportunities in the region.
Expanding Energy Access
In the energy sector, USAID’s contributions have been pivotal. The Gomal Zam Dam, supported by USAID, generates 253 megawatts of clean, affordable energy for K-P. On a national level, USAID’s energy projects have added 4,000 megawatts of clean energy to Pakistan’s grid, underscoring its commitment to sustainable and affordable energy solutions.
Education Sector Transformation
Education remains a top priority for USAID. The agency has supported the construction of 29 new schools and rehabilitated over 1,000 schools impacted by conflict or natural disasters. Beyond infrastructure, USAID has fostered public-private partnerships to ensure quality education.
In higher education, USAID has assisted eight universities, establishing an energy center at the University of Engineering and Technology Peshawar and constructing faculty of education buildings at Gomal University, University of Peshawar, Hazara University, and University of Malakand. Additionally, over 1,000 merit- and need-based scholarships have been awarded to students in K-P.
Health and Disaster Relief Initiatives
Health receives nearly 50% of USAID’s Pakistan budget. The agency focuses on maternal and child healthcare, quality medical services, and sanitation. Projects include digging 180 drinking water wells and installing 120 kilometers of municipal drainage pipes. In response to the devastating 2022 floods, USAID allocated $200 million for relief and recovery efforts.
Tackling Climate Change
USAID’s climate initiatives in K-P are led by the US-Pakistan Green Alliance, focusing on water, energy, and agriculture. Somvongsiri noted alignment between the US and Pakistani governments on climate change strategies, fostering sustainable environmental practices.
Commitment to Pakistan’s Prosperity
Somvongsiri reaffirmed USAID’s commitment to supporting K-P’s government and merged districts, focusing on sustainable development and disaster resilience. Through initiatives like ERA and broader sectoral aid, USAID remains a steadfast partner in Pakistan’s journey toward a prosperous future.
