Trump-Putin Meet: Progress on Ukraine Peace

After the meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, it was reported that there has been progress toward a peace agreement in Ukraine; however, no ceasefire was announced.

The meeting took place on Friday at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, starting at 11:30 a.m. and continuing through lunch and delegation-level discussions. During the joint press conference, both leaders declined to take questions from reporters.

Speaking later to Fox News, President Trump said that negotiations over land swaps had taken place and a substantial agreement had been reached, but final approval must come from Ukraine. He added that, for now, no additional sanctions or severe measures would be imposed on Russia, though they could be implemented if the war continues.

President Putin stated that the agreement would be important for regional peace, but emphasized the need to ensure Russia’s security and Ukraine’s protection. He suggested holding the next meeting in Moscow, to which Trump responded that it is possible, although he might face criticism.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was not included in this meeting; however, Trump said he would remain in contact with allies and Zelensky to provide details of the discussions.

Ukraine’s parliament member Oleksiy Honcharenko said that despite the meeting, no ceasefire or reduction in tensions has occurred. Former U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton told CNN that Trump did not gain much, while Putin managed to secure most of his demands.

Both leaders praised each other during the meeting, which featured a blue backdrop displaying the words “Quest for Peace.” This marked the seventh direct meeting between Trump and Putin.
