U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the strictest immigration measures in recent history following an attack on a National Guard officer in Washington, D.C. Trump declared that immigration from all “third-world” and developing countries will be “permanently suspended.” He also ordered an immediate and thorough security audit of Green Card holders from 19 selected countries.
The announcement came after 29-year-old Afghan-born Rahmanullah Lakanwal was accused of opening fire on two U.S. National Guard members. The attack resulted in the death of 20-year-old Sarah Backstrom, while the second officer remains in critical condition.
Trump sharply criticized former President Joe Biden, accusing him of allowing “unvetted Afghan refugees” into the country during the 2021 military withdrawal from Afghanistan.
During the press conference, when a reporter pointed out that the attacker had received his visa during Trump’s own tenure, Trump dismissed the question and called the reporter “stupid.”
Trump further announced that federal benefits for non-citizens will be revoked, citizenship will be cancelled for immigrants deemed a security threat, and all individuals who “do not align with Western civilization” will be deported.
According to U.S. officials, the security audit for Green Card holders from 19 countries will be a “strict and comprehensive process.” These countries include Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, Yemen, Somalia, Sudan, Venezuela, Burma, Congo, and several other African and Asian states.
The incident has reignited nationwide debate over immigration and security policies across the United States.
