Strong Tremors Shake Swat and Surrounding Areas
Severe tremors were felt in Swat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and its outskirts, due to which citizens came out of their homes in fear.
According to the Seismological Center, the magnitude of the earthquake was recorded as 4.4 on the Richter scale. The epicenter of the earthquake was in the Hindu Kush region, while the depth of the earth was 185 kilometers.
Why do earthquakes occur?
The question often arises in minds as to why earthquakes occur. According to geologists, when large rocks or geological plates inside the earth break or move due to severe pressure, its effect is reflected on the surface of the earth, which is called an earthquake.
The underground location of the earthquake is called the focus, while the point just above the axis on the earth is called the epicenter.
According to experts, earthquake energy is transmitted through three types of waves, called P-waves, S-waves, and L-waves.
These waves propagate in all directions from the axis and determine the intensity and level of destruction on the Earth’s surface.
The damage caused by an earthquake depends on its intensity and depth underground. If the depth of the earthquake is shallow, its effects on the Earth are more destructive.
