Sohail Khan Afridi Elected as New CM of KP

Sohail Khan Afridi, the candidate from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has been elected as the new Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 90 votes in the provincial assembly. A minimum of 73 votes was required to win. His opponents included Maulana Fazlur Rehman from Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI), Arbab Zark from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), and Sardar Shahjahan from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). Sohail Afridi is the fourth Chief Minister from PTI to serve in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, following Pervez Khattak, Mahmood Khan, and Ali Amin Gandapur. The election took place during a session of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly in Peshawar on Monday, presided over by Speaker Babar Saleem Swati. At the start of the session, former Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur addressed the assembly, while the opposition parties announced a boycott of the election process and staged a walkout. The session was marked by intense disruption, with heated exchanges between the Speaker, former Chief Minister, assembly members, and opposition leaders. Ali Amin Gandapur stated that he had already resigned from the office of Chief Minister and urged that the democratic process not be mocked. He congratulated Sohail Afridi in advance and expressed full support for him. Gandapur further stated that his performance over the past 18 months is a matter of record, highlighting that 28 billion rupees remain in the provincial treasury. He said significant efforts were made to tackle terrorism and economic challenges, calling on the federal government to pay attention to the law and order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He also mentioned that Muslims worldwide are facing oppression, and their struggle will continue for the betterment of Pakistan and the province.
