Continuous heavy rainfall since last night has submerged Sialkot city, turning streets and markets into flowing streams. The rain has caused severe traffic jams across the city, with long queues of vehicles. Water has entered homes, shops, and offices, disrupting business activities. Low-lying areas have been inundated, paralyzing life in the city and its surrounding regions.
According to the Meteorological Department, Sialkot recorded 228 mm of rain in the past 24 hours. Overflowing streams and drains have effectively turned the entire city into a waterway. Additionally, due to water being released from India, there is a high risk of severe flooding in the Chenab River. The meteorological department stated that radar systems indicate heavy to extremely heavy rainfall continuing in the upper areas of the Chenab River basin. Citizens are praying for divine protection and mercy during this critical time.
Punjab Government Orders Army Deployment for Relief Operations
Following the Chief Minister of Punjab’s directive, the army has been deployed in six districts – Lahore, Kasur, Sialkot, Faisalabad, Narowal, and Okara – to assist district administrations in emergency relief and safeguard human lives. District authorities, PDMA, Rescue 1122, Civil Defence, and police are already performing frontline duties, but army support has been requested to prevent any untoward incidents.
The Punjab Home Department has written to the Federal Ministry of Interior for army deployment. The number of troops in each district will be determined in consultation with the local administration. Army aviation and other resources will also be provided in flood-affected areas as needed.
All relevant departments of the Punjab government are monitoring the flood situation 24/7 and taking timely measures to protect lives and property. Citizens are advised to remain vigilant and follow safety instructions.
