According to the army spokesperson, earlier in April 2024, an order was also issued to release 20 criminals on humanitarian grounds as per the law.
It may be recalled that law enforcement agencies had made several arrests on charges of attacks on military property during the protests that followed the arrest of PTI founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan on May 9, 2023.
On December 21 last year, 25 convicts were sentenced to various terms of rigorous imprisonment in the first phase, while the sentences of another 60 were announced on December 26.
The sentences were announced after the Supreme Court on December 13 gave conditional permission to pronounce the verdicts in the cases of another 85 accused from the cases pending in the military courts.
It should be noted that of the 19 people who have been pardoned, 15 are from the 60 who were sentenced on December 26, while four are from the 25 who were sentenced on December 21.
It is not clear at what point they were arrested, but most of them had already served a major part of their sentences.
