Senate Overwhelmingly Approves 27th Constitutional Amendment

The Senate has overwhelmingly approved all clauses of the 27th Constitutional Amendment. Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gillani announced the results, stating that 64 votes were cast in favor, while no member voted against the amendment.

Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar moved the approval motion, which was presented clause by clause in the house under the chairmanship of the Senate Chairman. During the session, opposition members protested strongly, tearing copies of the bill and gathering in front of the Chairman. However, PTI Senator Saifullah Abro and JUI Senators Ahmed Khan and Naseema Ehsan voted in favor of the amendment.

Under the amendment, decisions of the Federal Constitutional Court will now apply to all courts in the country, including the Supreme Court. All public-interest cases before constitutional benches will be transferred to the Federal Constitutional Court. Additionally, amendments to Articles 42, 59, 63A, 68, 78, 81, 93, 100, 114, 130M, 165A, and 175A were passed, including provisions for the representation of the Chief Justice and senior judges in the Judicial Commission.
