The government has moved closer to the privatization of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) as preparations for the second attempt at privatization have entered their final phase. The Privatization Commission has formally invited interested companies to participate in the bidding process scheduled for December 23.
According to sources, PIA’s total assets are valued between PKR 150 billion and PKR 190 billion. The national airline owns a fleet of 34 aircraft, out of which only 18 are currently operational, while 16 remain grounded. PIA operates around 70 flights daily, including 45 international and 25 domestic flights.
At present, PIA is serving 18 international and 13 domestic routes. Its fleet consists of Boeing 777, Airbus, and ATR aircraft. The airline has a workforce of approximately 9,500 employees, including around 6,500 permanent staff, while the remaining employees are on contract and daily wages.
Sources revealed that PIA’s daily revenue ranges between PKR 600 million and PKR 800 million. During the first six months of 2025 (January to June), the airline generated revenue worth PKR 112 billion. PIA-owned hotels in the United States and France have already been separated from the airline and placed under independent companies.
Companies interested in acquiring PIA have assured the Privatization Commission that no employee will be laid off for at least one year following privatization. However, they refused to accept the condition of retaining employees for three years. The government is considering selling 51 to 100 percent of PIA’s shares, while flights to London and Birmingham are expected to resume soon.
