The official rate of sugar is not being implemented across various cities, as retail prices have surged up to Rs210 per kilogram in open markets.
According to reports, sugar in Lahore and Peshawar is being sold between Rs190 and Rs210 per kg, while in Quetta, the retail price stands at Rs185 and the wholesale rate at Rs180 per kg. In Rawalpindi, the government-fixed price is Rs179 per kg, but shopkeepers are compelled to sell it between Rs181 and Rs185 per kg due to supply shortages.
President of the Kiryana Association Rawalpindi, Saleem Pervaiz Butt, said that selling at the official rate is impossible because the government’s supply is insufficient.
He stated, “Retailers are barely managing to sell sugar at Rs185 per kg, yet the Price Control Force continues to impose fines for exceeding official rates.”
