On Friday, the Punjab Education Department sent out updated schedules for all of the province’s schools.
The updated schedule will take effect on May 18 and run until May 31, 2024. The notice stated that the intense heat was the reason for the decision to adjust the school schedule.
The following are Punjab’s new school hours:
- 7:00 am to 11:30 am, Monday through Thursday, and on Saturday.
- Friday: from 7 a.m. till 10:30 a.m.
Additionally, the department of education has sent a warning asking schools to exercise prudence during this time. The agency has instructed the heads of schools to make sure that every fan in the building is operational.
Making sure that water coolers are available is one of the additional precautions. The notice further stated that no pupil in any school in the province should be required to spend the summer sitting outside on a lawn.
However, summer break for schools has also been announced by the Punjab School Education Department. The Punjabi education department said on Friday that all public and private schools would be suspended from June 1 to August 14, 2024.
The notification also directed school administrators to take the following preventative actions: make sure fans were in good operating order, make sure water coolers were available, and make sure that no student was forced to spend the summer sitting in an open area or on the school lawn.
In addition, chief executive officers and heads of institutions were instructed to make sure that the aforementioned directives were followed in “true letter and spirit.”
Rana Sikandar Hayat, the Minister for School Education in Punjab, emphasised the critical need for immediate climate action and that each and every person had a “vital role to play in mitigating the effects of climate change!”
