Pope Francis Passes Away at 88
The 266th Pope Francis, the spiritual leader of the Roman Catholic Church, has died at the age of 88.
The Vatican’s camerlengo, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, confirmed his death, saying that Pope Francis passed away at 7:35 a.m. today.
He had been suffering from lung disease and pneumonia for several months, but despite this, he delivered the “Urbi et Orbi” prayer in St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025.
According to the Vatican, Pope Francis’ funeral will be held in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, as he had directed in his will. Historically, he will be the first pope to be buried outside Vatican City.
Pope Francis, whose real name is Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
He was elected pope in 2013, becoming the first Latin American and the first Jesuit pope.
During his tenure, the papacy has undergone significant reforms. He has made significant contributions to social justice, environmental protection, and interfaith harmony.
A statement issued by the Vatican said that Pope Francis’ life was spent in selfless service to God and the Church, and his spiritual leadership will always be remembered.
