PM Arrives In Gilgit-Baltistan To Assess Flood And Rain Damage

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Gilgit-Baltistan on a day-long visit to assess the destruction caused by recent torrential rains and flash floods in the region.

During the visit, the prime minister will meet with flood-affected residents and distribute financial compensation cheques to the families of victims. He is also scheduled to chair a high-level meeting to review the extent of the damage and the ongoing relief efforts.

PM Shehbaz will hold meetings with Gilgit-Baltistan Governor Syed Mehdi Shah and Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan to discuss the situation and further response measures.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Lt. Gen. Inam Haider Malik, reported that this year’s monsoon-related disasters have claimed 295 lives and left over 700 injured across Pakistan. He added that more than 1,600 homes have been completely destroyed, and 376 livestock have perished.

The NDMA chief warned of continuing flood threats, with minor flooding expected in rivers and streams at Tarbela, Chashma, Taunsa, and Kalabagh. Moderate flooding is forecast at Head Marala and Guddu on the Chenab River. He cautioned that monsoon activity is likely to intensify toward the end of August.

On July 25, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) successfully carried out a rescue mission in Gilgit-Baltistan, evacuating stranded tourists and locals following a devastating cloudburst and flash floods.

A PAF C-130 aircraft transported 125 people to safety, including 82 civilians, 25 Pakistan Army personnel, and 18 from the Pakistan Air Force. The aircraft departed Qadri Base at 8:52 AM and landed safely at Noor Khan Airbase, completing the mission without incident.
