Peace Is Possible Through Dialogue, Not Conflict: General Sahir Shamshad Mirza
Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Sahir Shamshad Mirza has said that Pakistan and India are close to removing additional forces deployed on their borders
, and both countries are returning to the situation before mid-April.
He was talking to an international news agency on the sidelines of the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue security meeting held in Singapore.
General Sahir said that both the armies have started the process of reducing the number of troops to reduce border tensions.
“We are almost back to the position before April 22. It was a dangerous situation, although there was no practical movement of nuclear weapons, but the fear is always there.”
General Sahir Shamshad Mirza expressed concern that the recent tension was not limited to the disputed region of Kashmir, but this trend could affect the whole of Pakistan and India in the future.
“This is a new and dangerous direction. Such situations may become more complicated in the future and the risk of strategic wrong decisions increases.”
He warned that there is no effective crisis management mechanism between Pakistan and India, which could delay or fail international mediation in the event of a future conflict.
“Damage and destruction could occur before the international community intervenes. In the current situation, there is no sign of back-channel or informal diplomacy.”
In response to a question, General Sahir Shamshad Mirza clarified that he has no plans to meet Indian Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, even though he is also present at the Shangri-La Dialogue.
