Pakistan’s Vital Role Highlighted in Global Peacekeeping

Today, we are celebrating the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers together with the international community.

This day is not only a reminder of the countless sacrifices made by UN peacekeepers in achieving international peace and security, but also an acknowledgement of the important role these peacekeepers play in achieving a peaceful, stable, and prosperous world.

In the seven-decade history of UN peacekeeping missions, more than 235,000 Pakistani peacekeepers have rendered distinguished service in 48 UN missions around the world.

181 Pakistani peacekeepers have made the eternal sacrifice of their lives in achieving international peace and security.

This day is an opportune occasion to review the many challenges facing UN peacekeeping, such as increasingly unilateral policies, financial sanctions, growing threats to the safety and security of UN peacekeepers, targeting of UN peacekeeping operations based on disinformation, and the destabilizing effects of new and emerging technologies.

On this day, I call on the international community to reaffirm its commitment to the successful policies of the United Nations in maintaining international peace and security,

and to redouble its efforts to adapt UN peacekeeping to these rapidly evolving challenges.

In an effort to address these challenges, Pakistan, along with the Republic of Korea, co-hosted the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial Meeting in Islamabad on 15-16 April 2025 with the theme “Towards a Safer and More Effective Peace: Using Technology and an Integrated Approach”.

Pakistan also hosts the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP), one of the oldest UN peacekeeping missions, tasked with monitoring the ceasefire along the Line of Control in the UN-recognized disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

Recent events in South Asia have highlighted the need to strengthen the role and presence of UNMOGIP and ensure a just resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

As a leading military contributor and a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, I today reiterate Pakistan’s commitment and support in all efforts to further strengthen United Nations peacekeeping missions.
