Fauzia Janjua, who is first Muslim woman of Pakistani origin to be elected mayor, says its a moment of pride
ISLAMABAD: In a positive development, a Pakistani-American woman Fauzia Janjua has been elected as the town mayor of New Jersey, The News reported Friday.
Hailing from Chakwal, Punjab, Fauzia took the oath of her new responsibility on the Holy Quran alongside her husband and children at the Township Hall.
She is the first Muslim lady of Pakistani origin to have been elected town mayor from New Jersey. In her speech on the occasion, Fauzia described her election as a moment of pride.
New Jersey State Delegate, Ditty Murphy, composed on X: “It is a particularly significant privilege to regulate the promises of office this evening in Mount Shrub. It was very extraordinary to commend my dear companions — City chairman Fozia Janjua (first Muslim and South Asian Chairman in municipality history) and Delegate Chairman Nik Moustakas on this notable event.”
Fauzia’s dad Idris has a place with Chakwal while her mom hails from Lahore. Her dad relocated to the US during the 70s where Fauzia was conceived. She said she has settled on local area administration and is granting instruction to unfortunate youngsters and detainees.
With her political decision to the town, the mayoral position has gone to liberals without precedent for 36 years. Preceding her political race, the city hall leader opening was constantly held by a conservative delegate.
