Pakistani Citizens Data Sold Online for Peanuts
The personal data of thousands of Pakistanis, including federal ministers, government figures, and senior bureaucrats, has been leaked and is being sold openly on the internet. Shockingly, the leaked information includes mobile SIM owners’ addresses, call records, CNIC copies, and even international travel details, all available for just a few hundred rupees.
Reports reveal that from the Federal Interior Minister down to PTA spokespersons, no one has been spared — their private data is being traded openly and even searchable on Google. Despite warnings issued a year ago, authorities, including PTA and NCC, have remained silent while this black market continues to thrive.
Criminals are reportedly buying this information for peanuts, with mobile location details available for only Rs. 500, complete call data records for Rs. 2,000, and international travel history for just Rs. 5,000. Experts fear that such leaks could put ordinary citizens in danger.
Following public outrage, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has taken immediate notice and directed the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) to launch a full investigation. According to the Ministry of Interior’s spokesperson, a special inquiry team has been formed to probe every aspect of the data leak. The team has been ordered to submit its report within 14 days, and strict legal action will be taken against those involved.
