The cost of internet access in 2025 reveals major global inequalities, with some countries paying over $4 per megabit while others spend just a few cents.
According to We Are Social, Pakistan ranks among the world’s 10 most expensive countries for fixed broadband, where users pay an average of $0.53 per Mbps, higher than in the UK, South Africa, and Indonesia.
At the top of the list, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has the world’s highest broadband cost at $4.31 per Mbps, followed by Ghana ($2.58) and Switzerland ($2.07). Kenya ($1.54) and Morocco ($1.16) complete the top five.
Analysts say Pakistan’s high rates stem from limited market competition, slow fiber expansion, and infrastructure challenges, especially in rural areas.
Meanwhile, internet access remains far more affordable in Eastern Europe and parts of Asia. Romania offers broadband at just $0.01 per Mbps, followed by Russia and Thailand ($0.02). Chile, Poland, and Singapore also offer highly competitive rates of around $0.03 per Mbps, supported by strong infrastructure and open telecom markets.
