Pakistan Scientists Win the Team Impact Prize from MRC

The UK’s Medical Research Council (MRC) awarded Prof. Dr. Iqbal Choudhary, Prof. Dr. Sammer Yousuf, and their team—which included faculty members from the HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry and the Dr. Panjwani Centre for Molecular Medicine Drug Research—the Outstanding Team Impact medal.

The Outstanding Team Impact medal, according to the UK Research and Innovation website, honours a group whose cooperative team science methodology had a significant influence on medical research. It honours groups that solve difficult and urgent problems in human health and research by assembling experts and researchers with a range of scientific training and experience.

The Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported that “a team of researchers from the University of Karachi has been honoured with the prestigious ‘Outstanding Team Impact Prize’ by the UK MRC.” Prof. Dr. M Iqbal Chaudhry and Prof. Dr. Sammer Yousaf from the Dr. Panjwani Centre for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research and the HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry, respectively, were named.

They won recognition for their work on “A Global Network of Tropical Neglected Diseases,” which brought together a wide range of specialised knowledge from many scientific fields.

The award is granted to a remarkable group whose cooperative scientific approach has had a major influence on medical research. The award was given in light of research findings produced as part of “A Global Network of the Tropical Neglected Diseases (NTD),” which was directed by Durham University in the United Kingdom and supported by the Medical Research Council (MRC) through the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF).

Prominent scientists from Pakistan, Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina, and the UK made up the NTD network, which collaborated to combat leishmaniasis, Chagas disease, and protozoan NTDs.

The leadership of Professor Choudhary, coupled with his varied knowledge from different scientific backgrounds, demonstrated the results of team science in leishmaniasis research, which is an honour for Pakistan. Pakistan’s academic community has congratulated Prof. Dr. Iqbal Ch and his team for winning yet another esteemed award.
