Pakistan Rejects UNHCR Statement On 27th Amendment

Pakistan has strongly rejected the statement issued by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights regarding the 27th Constitutional Amendment, terming it baseless, unwarranted, and contrary to facts.

According to the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Pakistani Parliament passed the 27th Constitutional Amendment with a two-thirds majority. However, the UN statement neither reflected Pakistan’s perspective nor acknowledged the ground realities.

The spokesperson emphasized that, like all democratic countries, constitutional amendments and legislation are the exclusive prerogative of Pakistan’s elected representatives. Democracy and democratic processes form the foundation of civil and political rights, and respecting them is essential.

The Foreign Office further stated that Pakistan remains fully committed to protecting fundamental freedoms and human rights enshrined in its Constitution. The spokesperson urged the High Commissioner to respect the sovereign decisions of Pakistan’s Parliament and avoid issuing statements based on political bias or misinformation.

It was clarified that the latest amendments were carried out strictly in accordance with the constitutional procedures laid down in Pakistan’s legal framework.
