Pakistan Faces Extreme Drought Risk as 40% Less Rainfall Recorded

According to the advisory of the Drought Monitoring Center of the Meteorological Department, the risk of drought has become more severe in Pakistan due to an unusual decrease in rainfall.

In the last seven months, 40 percent less rainfall was recorded than usual, due to which many areas of Sindh, Balochistan and Punjab have been severely affected.

According to the advisory

Sindh has received 62% less rainfall, Balochistan 52% and Punjab 38%. Karachi, Tharparkar, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Badin and Sanghar are under drought.

Gwadar, Panjgur, Kech, Chaghi and Awaran in Balochistan are also drought-stricken. Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar and Rahim Yar Khan are among the affected areas in Punjab.

In addition, severe water shortages are being seen in Tarbela and Mangla dams, which may affect agriculture and drinking water supply. The Meteorological Department has warned that the drought may intensify further due to the increase in temperatures in the coming months.
