Multan Braces for Major Flood Threat

Director General of the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Irfan Ali Kathia, has warned that over 70,000 cusecs of water from India may flow into Pakistan in the coming days, worsening the flood situation. According to media reports, the breach of Madhopur Headworks in India is sending additional water toward Pakistan. While Lahore remains safe from flooding for now, alerts have been issued for Kasur and Multan districts. DG PDMA said that to protect Jhang city, a protective bund had to be breached, while Head Islam also faces serious threats within the next 24 hours. At present, the water flow at Ganda Singh stands at 303,000 cusecs, prompting the army and district administration to evacuate 20 villages. Meanwhile, Head Sulemanki is passing over 100,000 cusecs, and Head Marala has recorded 175,000 cusecs. In River Ravi, a flow of 220,000 cusecs has already passed, with 129,000 cusecs still present. At Balloki, the water flow has reached 211,000 cusecs, while an additional 20,000 cusecs from Nankana Sahib has merged into the system. Authorities fear that at Head Muhammad Wala, a 700,000 cusecs flood wave may reach Multan, where deliberate breaches might become necessary.
