Authorities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) are thinking of closing 14 universities because of low academic standards and budgetary problems. According to sources, the Task Force Committee for Higher Education has expressed reservations regarding the way these universities are run.
On July 11, the task force’s decisions will be concluded and authorised by the KP government. The Higher instruction Commission (HEC) said earlier this year that the University of Peshawar, which was historically known for its research and instruction, was the province’s least productive public university for 2022–2023.
The university’s performance score on the HEC’s assessment was a mere 10%. With scores below thirty percent, several other universities, including Gomal University, Sarhad University of Science and Information Technology (SUIT), and Kohat University of Science and Technology (KUST), also fared poorly.
By comparison, the University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar came in second with over 60 percent, while Khyber Medical University came in first with over 70 percent. The University of Hazara had a score of over 52%, Abdul Wali Khan University in Mardan received 53%, and Islamia College University in Peshawar received a score of 48%.
The universities of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women’s University in Peshawar, Abbottabad University of Science and Technology (AUST), and Malakand received scores of forty percent, twenty percent, and thirty percent, in that order.
