Marijuana and Life Expectancy: The Hidden Risks

A new Canadian study shows that people who are hospitalized or admitted to the emergency room for marijuana overdose have an increased risk of dying within five years.

The study, published in JAMA Network Open, highlights the seriousness of the problem as a public health concern, the researchers said.

The problem is particularly worrisome among young people, as marijuana has become more widely available commercially since its legalization.

The study’s lead author, Dr. Daniel Miran, said marijuana use is growing rapidly worldwide, with more people now using marijuana than drinking alcohol every day in Canada and the United States.

They added that since increased marijuana use is also associated with an increased risk of early death, especially among the younger population, it is important that we identify it and begin to address this public health issue.

The effects of marijuana use on a person’s life depend on many factors, such as the amount of use, duration, lifestyle, overall health, and other medical or psychological problems.

In general:

Marijuana itself does not directly cause death, but its long-term use can cause various diseases that can shorten life.

The risks are increased if a person also uses cigarettes, alcohol, or other drugs along with marijuana.

Mental health: Continued use can lead to problems such as depression, anxiety, memory loss, and schizophrenia.

Heart disease: Marijuana can increase the heart rate, which can increase the risk of heart attack

Lung problems: Marijuana can cause lung damage if smoked or inhaled in other ways
