List of Prohibited and Restricted Border Areas in Pakistan

The following areas are off-limits to foreign nationals in Pakistan and are restricted, forbidden, or border areas. It takes specific authorization, such as permits and No-Objection Certificates from various state agencies, to enter these areas.

Certain Regions of Azad Kashmir

10-mile stretch running parallel to the Line of Control (LOC)

Locations in Balochistan

  • Except for Quetta, Sibi, and Kalat Division
  • City of Quetta
  • Chaman Road in Quetta
  • Ziarat and the Quetta-Ziarat Road
  • Quetta-Zahidan Highway
  • Jacobabad-Sukkur Road, Quetta Zhob
  • (Loralai Dera Ghazi Khan Road) Zahidan-Quetta
  • Hub-Chowki and Uthal Industrial Area in the Lesbela District

Prohibited Areas/Cntonments

  • Places that are forbidden to fall into or out of cantonments as defined by Official Act, 1923, section 2(8)
  • cantonments that are isolated, like Shorkot, Gujranwala, and Kharian.
  • excluding the roads, market areas, civil areas, parks, hotels, and airports, etc. cantonments combining with civil areas like Peshawar, Nowshera, Rawalpindi, and Lahore, etc.
  • Every significant installation that has a clearly marked “prohibited area” sign.

A few Northern Areas regions

  • A ten-mile radius surrounds the Line of Control; a thirty-mile radius hugs the border with Afghanistan’s Wakhan Province. Northern Regions, with the exception of the section of the Karakoram Highway that passes through Gircha on its way to Bara Khun.

  • Foreigners can now travel along the Pakistan-China border (KKH) from Thakot to Khunjerab Pass. Foreigners are not permitted to travel cross-country or on either side of the road within the 30-mile radius mentioned above.
  • The border between India and Pakistan is a ten-mile stretch that does not include the highway to India via the Wagah checkpost or any other authorized checkpost.
  • Except for Yari Creek, the Main Channel and PIDC Channel are located north of Nine Green Buoy.

Pakistan-Afghan Border

  • A belt extending 10 miles from the Pakistan-Afghan border through the Chitral district, with the exception of Wakhan, Afghanistan, where the distance should be 30 miles.
  • Pakistan-China Border: A ten-mile stretch that runs the length of the border.

Tribal Regions in the Northwest

  • Kurram Agency: Pakistan’s North and South
  • The names Bajour, Kot, and Agra refer to locations in the Malakand Division.
  • Dir District: Nagdara and Usheri Darra.
  • Mohmand Agency—apart from Power House and Warsak Dam—
  • Except for Peshawar-Torkham Road, the Khyber Agency
  • Except for the Peshawar-Kohat Road, the tribal areas that are part of the Kohat District and Dara Adam Khel include gun factories.
  • Special Areas connected to the districts of Bannu and D.I. Khan.
