Lahore (Special Correspondent) Lahore High Court has announced to constitute a full court bench to hear the case of harassment of female students and said that this matter is of utmost importance.
Lahore High Court Chief Justice Alia Neelam on Friday directed authorities to take the statement of the alleged victim linked to the alleged “rape” of a private college student in Lahore that sparked violent protests in the province. Which continues to this day.
Around 400 people protesting against harassment and sexual abuse of female students in educational institutions have been arrested in Rawalpindi alone as Section 144 is in force in the province, banning gatherings and demonstrations.
Cases have been registered against several hundred people for violating Section 144 in Lahore and other cities.
Meanwhile, all private and government schools, universities and colleges of the province remained closed today.
Amid the unrest in Punjab, the LHC took up three separate incidents including a protest against alleged rape, an alleged suicide at Punjab University, and a harassment case at Lahore College of Women University (LCWU).
During the hearing, Inspector General Police Punjab Usman Anwar and other officials appeared in the court seeking a complete report from the court.
Lahore High Court Chief Justice Neelam expressed anger at the police chief for failing to stop the videos from going viral on social media and stopping the angry students from coming to the streets.
He asked the reason for the delay in reaching the concerned agencies to curb the viral videos.
On this, IGP Anwar told the court that he had contacted the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority.
When asked about the role played by the provincial government, the Advocate General of Punjab said that the concerned Assistant Superintendent of Police met the family of the private college student involved in the alleged rape and checked the CCTV footage.
