LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday ordered all restaurants in the city to close by midnight in a bid to control the worsening air quality caused by smog, ARY News reported.

Justice Shahid Karim, who is overseeing petitions related to environmental pollution and smog, emphasized that climate change is a serious issue and cannot be overlooked. He warned that any violation of the restaurant’s timing restrictions would lead to legal action.

Addressing ongoing infrastructure concerns, the court highlighted that the Yellow Line project is already under the oversight of an independent consultant.

The court also reaffirmed the heritage status of the Lahore Canal, citing Supreme Court rulings, and ordered that no trees may be cut along the canal without prior court approval.

Support for Traffic Wardens
About the court’s February 28 hearing, Justice Shahid Karim had earlier directed authorities to expedite the provision of health allowances to traffic wardens. Appreciating their role in managing city traffic, the court also urged for the immediate establishment of a proper service structure for them.

The hearing has been adjourned until July 28.
