Karachi University Modifies PhD Admission Requirements

The PhD admission test passing score was raised from 50 to 60 by the Karachi University (UoK) in order to comply with the new PhD policy that the Higher Education Commission (HEC) announced.

The entrance test is set for July 28. Admissions for MPhil and PhD programmes will begin on June 23. The start of the upcoming academic year is set for September 1. The passing score for the MPhil admission exam is still 50, however students must now obtain at least 60 points to pass the amended policy’s PhD admission exam.

The new PhD standards from the HEC are incorporated into the policy modification, according to Professor Dr. Anila Amber Malik, Convener of the Postgraduate Studies Admission Committee at the University of Kent, who spoke with Express-News on Friday.

The revised regulation reduces the minimum CGPA requirement for MPhil from 3 to 2.6, or nearly 70% of the possible points, and raises the passing score for the PhD admission exam.

Additionally, PhD programmes now have stricter publication requirements. It is now required of the students to publish two research papers in Y-category journals or to publish their study in an X-category publication. Officials warned that students could not be able to register in the “Pakistan Country Directory” (PCD) if they didn’t comply with these publication criteria.

Dr. Anila also discussed parts of the HEC’s new policy that the institution chose not to implement, including the mandate to submit PhD theses to two eminent professors or the top 500 universities for review. She made the point that not all of the top 500 colleges provide every discipline, and that there are not many eminent academics in the nation who specialise in different fields. In lieu of this requirement, the institution has chosen to transmit the thesis to industrialised nations for review.

Additionally, UoK is also accepting applications for interdisciplinary MPhil and PhD programmes for the first time. This implies that applicants who have completed their bachelor’s degree in one department and meet the requirements established by the appropriate Departmental Research Committee may submit an application for admission to another faculty. However, after being accepted, students must finish nine to twelve credit hours of prerequisite coursework.
