Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab has decided to completely phase out water supply through hydrants and water tankers across the city. He directed senior officials of the Water Corporation to gradually shut down all seven hydrants and ensure water supply to citizens through pipeline networks directly to their homes.
The Mayor stated that water hydrants were generating around Rs 3 billion per month in revenue, but their contracts expired last year and will not be renewed. He emphasized that the aim is to free citizens from dependence on water tankers, calling it an unsustainable and inconvenient system.
Murtaza Wahab said that water shortages in the city would be managed by supplying water to different areas on alternate days through pipelines. He added that tanker-based supply is not a permanent solution and causes unnecessary hardship for residents.
Meanwhile, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has also decided to introduce large-scale financial reforms. During a meeting with a delegation from the FABS Directorate and the Controller General of Accounts, the Mayor was briefed on financial and administrative matters.
The Mayor directed that the pension system be digitized immediately and announced that the development payment system would also be linked to the SAP system. He further stated that digitizing challans, fines, and rent collection is a priority, and instructed officials to prepare a comprehensive plan for treatment plants and other investment projects at the earliest.
