Italian Flotilla Member Converts to Islam in Israeli Custody

Tommaso Bortolazzi, an Italian member of the Global Samoud Flotilla and captain of the ship Maria Kristen, embraced Islam during his detention in Israel.

According to Turkish media reports, Bortolazzi was arrested by Israeli forces while sailing with other peace activists on a mission to deliver humanitarian aid to the besieged people of Gaza. After his release and arrival in Turkey, he told journalists that joining the flotilla was his way of expressing solidarity with the Palestinians.

Bortolazzi revealed that his time in prison was extremely difficult, but most of his fellow detainees were Turkish Muslims who continued to pray despite restrictions. He said that witnessing their faith and perseverance deeply moved him.

“I accepted Islam not under any pressure, but as a calling from my heart,” Bortolazzi said. “It is a spiritual awakening and the beginning of a new life for me.”

He expressed his contentment and happiness over the decision, adding that he intends to live his life according to the teachings of Islam.
