Ishaq Dar Chairs Key Meeting on Sugar Pricing and Supply

ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar chaired a high-level meeting to review the supply and pricing of essential food items, with a particular focus on sugar.

The meeting brought together the Minister for National Food Security, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Bajwa, and senior officials from the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Ministry of Industries and Production, as well as representatives from the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) and provincial authorities.

Key decisions included submitting a policy for the import of 250,000 metric tons of raw sugar to the federal cabinet for approval. Additionally, the committee gave in-principle approval for the import of 500,000 metric tons of refined sugar, directing the Ministry of National Food Security to process the proposal through the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC).

Deputy Prime Minister Dar emphasized the government’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of both consumers and producers. He also underscored the importance of ensuring the availability of essential food items at affordable prices.
