Indus Treaty Breaks: Pakistan Warns of War

ISLAMABAD/NEW DELHI: Pakistan has taken a firm stand, making it clear that any interference with Pakistan’s river rights under the Indus Waters Treaty will be considered an act of war.

And that if India stops or diverts the flow of water, Pakistan will respond “with the full extent of its national power.”

This strong stance came after an emergency meeting of the National Security Committee, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, which was attended by the civilian and military leadership.

The meeting reviewed the recent steps taken by India in detail and considered an effective strategy.

Meanwhile, India has taken major decisions against Pakistan based on the Pahalgam incident. The Pakistani charge d’affaires in New Delhi was summoned and notices were issued declaring the diplomatic staff undesirable,

according to which the staff will have to leave the country within 7 days. Along with this, the visas of all Pakistanis have been cancelled and they have been ordered to leave India within 48 hours.

The Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson announced in a press conference that:

The Indus Waters Treaty has been suspended.

The Attari-Wagah border will be closed with immediate effect.

Pakistan’s Air Force and Navy attaches have been declared undesirable.

Visas granted to Pakistanis under SAARC are also being cancelled.

According to India, these measures will remain in force until Pakistan “credibly and unconditionally” ceases its support for cross-border terrorism.
