India’s Biggest Anti-Naxal Operation: 31 Rebels Killed
According to the Indian government, security forces have killed 31 Naxal rebels during a three-week-long operation.
The operation was carried out in the Karri Gatalo hills on the border of Chhattisgarh and Telangana, which were previously under the control of the rebels.
Home Minister Amit Shah said on the social media platform “X” on May 14 that this was the “biggest operation” against Naxalism so far. According to him, “the tricolor now flies proudly on the hill that was once a symbol of red terror.”
The Karri Gatalo hills were considered the joint headquarters of Naxal organizations, where they were provided with weapons and combat training.
Amit Shah vowed that the government is determined to eradicate Naxalism by March 31 next year.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised the operation, saying it showed that the campaign to eradicate Naxalism was “moving in the right direction”.
Modi said: “We are fully committed to bringing peace to Naxal-affected areas and integrating them into the mainstream of development.”
More than 400 Naxal rebels have been killed in security operations since last year, according to government figures. Last month, 11 rebels were killed in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.
