India Plane Crash: Hundreds Feared Dead
Ahmedabad: A tragic air accident took place this morning in the city of Ahmedabad in the Indian state of Gujarat, when an Air India passenger plane crashed into a residential area shortly after takeoff.
There were 242 passengers on board, including 169 Indians, 53 Britons, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian.
The accident occurred in the densely populated area of Meghani Nagar near the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
According to initial reports, the plane was flying to London when it went out of the airport limits and crashed into the ground a few moments later.
According to eyewitnesses, a loud explosion was heard, after which the entire area was covered in clouds of smoke.
Conflicting reports are being received regarding the number of passengers – some reports claim 133, some 242, and others 290 passengers were on board.
There has been no official confirmation of any casualties yet, but concerns are growing that the accident could result in significant casualties.
Aviation authorities, including the DGCA and Air India special teams, have reached the spot, and an investigation into the cause of the accident has been launched.
According to initial information, the plane crashed into residential buildings after hitting the airport fence, causing extensive damage on the ground.
A heavy contingent of emergency services, fire brigade, rescue agencies, and police are at the scene. The area has been sealed, and the public has been asked to stay away from the affected area.
Air India has revealed in a statement that flight AI171, which was flying from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, met with an accident on June 12, 2025.
According to reports from TV channels, the accident occurred when the plane was taking off. Scenes showed the wreckage engulfed in flames, and thick black smoke was seen rising into the sky near the airport.
