The Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan has recently released a report on the involvement of women in the judiciary.
The report details the number of women working as judges, lawyers, and prosecution officers in the country. According to the report, there are currently 3142 judges and law officers working across the country, of which only 572 or 18 percent are women. Out of the total number of 126 judges in the Supreme Court, the Federal Sharia Court, and the five High Courts, only 7 are females, accounting for 5.5 percent.
In the district courts, there are a total of 3016 judicial officers, out of which 565 or 19 percent are women. The report also revealed that out of 230,879 registered lawyers, 40,000 or 17 percent are women. Additionally, there are a total of 2,210 prosecution officers in the country, out of which 341 or 15 percent are women. The report highlights that while the percentage of women in the judiciary is significant, it is still low compared to the country’s population, and therefore, there is a need to take measures to increase the involvement of women in the judiciary.
