The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning about an impending monsoon system expected to bring heavy rains across the country from August 26 to 30, with southern regions, particularly Sindh and Balochistan, at the highest risk.
Originating from the Bay of Bengal, this monsoon system is predicted to impact Pakistan’s southern areas significantly. The PMD has forecast heavy downpours in Karachi, Thatta, Badin, Umerkot, Mirpur Khas, Sukkur, and Sanghar from August 25 to 29. The Met Office also warned of intense rainfall in Balochistan’s Kalat, Lasbela, and Barkhan districts between August 26 and 30, raising concerns about potential flash floods and overflowing streams.
In Punjab, regions including Murree, Islamabad, Lahore, and other upper areas are expected to experience rainfall from August 25 to 28. The forecast also indicates possible thunderstorms in northern Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), particularly in Hazara, Peshawar, and Mardan during the same period.
The PMD has highlighted significant flooding risks in low-lying areas of Sindh and Balochistan, while central Punjab faces the threat of urban flooding. Continuous rains in northern K-P and Gilgit-Baltistan have also heightened the risk of landslides.
Authorities are being urged to implement precautionary measures in vulnerable regions, with warnings issued about potential disruptions to transportation and communication networks.
