Govt Slashes Electric Car Charging Costs with Major Subsidy

The government has requested NEPRA to review the electricity tariffs for EV charging stations

. The government has proposed to use a cross-subsidy mechanism to balance the difference between the current and proposed tariffs.

The plan aims to ensure that 30 percent of vehicles in Pakistan are converted to electric by 2030.

Currently, EV charging stations are paying Rs 45 per unit, but after including taxes, the cost increases to Rs 71.10 per unit.

The government believes that these new tariff rates will help accelerate EV adoption. All applicable taxes and adjustments will be included in the revised rates.

The Power Division pointed out that the EV infrastructure in Pakistan is still underdeveloped, with only 8 charging stations operating across the country.

To address the challenges of climate change, the government plans to open up the market and attract more investors in the EV sector.

After consultations with stakeholders, the authorities decided to revise the regulatory framework.

The cabinet has approved a reduction in the basic tariff for EV charging stations, aimed at making electric vehicles more affordable. The lower charging cost is expected to encourage more people to switch to electric vehicles.

According to the Power Division, the commercial electricity tariff is around Rs 94 per unit. Although this is not fully implemented. Currently, consumers pay around Rs 70 per unit.
