From Deserted/Devastated Building to World-Class Skill Development University
Every morning brings fresh proof of the transformative power of skill education in this Pakistani institution.
In October 2019, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Mukhtar assumed leadership of what was then a nearly abandoned institution.
With vision and an unwavering commitment to innovation, he and his team have turned the National Skills University Islamabad (NSU) into a hub for skills education aligned with emerging technologies.
As his tenure formally concluded in October 2023, the University Senate graciously extended his term until a new Vice-Chancellor was appointed. He leaves behind a vibrant institution poised to inspire and equip generations.
A standout achievement during his tenure is the establishment of the NSU Sarmad Tanveer Campus in Muridke, Sheikhupura, the university’s first sub-campus.
The National Vocational and Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC) partially supports educational activities, and this campus embodies the university’s mission of accessibility and relevance.
At a recent Certificate Distribution Ceremony, the impact of this mission was apparent. Chief Guest Ms. Gulmina Bilal Ahmad, Chairperson of NAVTTC, joined in celebrating the skills certificate distribution ceremony; a pleasant surprise was that some had already secured jobs before the ink dried on their certificates.
Parents were joyful with pride, underscoring the life-changing potential of vocational education. According to Prof. Dr. Muhammad Mukhtar, Vice Chancellor of the National Skills University Islamabad, much of this success could be due to Dr. Bilawal Rehman, a dedicated and hardworking acting Campus Director.
NSU’s success stories are not confined to Muridke. Plans for a new campus in Karachi signal a broader commitment to making quality skills training accessible across Pakistan. Meanwhile, the university is at the forefront of redefining lifelong learning in Islamabad. By waiving age limits for skills certification, NSU fosters a culture of reskilling and upskilling. Among its alums is Mr. Umad ud Din from the National Highway and Motorway Police, who is celebrating his success and being a legendary learner, reflecting on the program’s excellence. After completing a Solar System Design and Installation course, Mr. Umad’s leadership in solar-related initiatives earned recognition within his organization. His recent completion of a Domestic and Industrial Electrician course, where he secured his first position, further cements his role as a change-maker in his field.

Special thanks to the Senior Leadership of the National Highway and Motorway Police, who assigned Mr. Umad ud Din to look after the motorway’s solar system. This highlights the power of reskilling in dynamic job markets.
