Farhan Khan Jadoon Hunts First Himalayan Ibex of the Season in Hunza
Gilgit: Farhan Khan Jadoon, a Pakistani hunter, has successfully hunted the first Himalayan ibex of the ongoing community-preserved controlled hunting season in Hussaini, District Hunza. The ibex, known for its majestic horns, boasted an impressive horn size of 44-45 inches. The Wildlife Department of Gilgit-Baltistan organized this hunt, conducted under the community-preserved controlled hunting program.
The program, designed to promote sustainable trophy hunting, ensures that the funds generated contribute directly to conservation efforts and the local communities. Farhan’s hunt has set a promising tone for this year’s hunting season. The income from community-controlled trophy hunting is distributed as 80% to the community and 20% to the government.
However, while the ibex hunting season is off to a successful start, the same cannot be said for markhor hunting in Gilgit-Baltistan. According to sources within the Forest, Wildlife, and Parks Department GB, the first auction for markhor hunting permits ended unsuccessfully due to low prices offered by hunters. In response, the Wildlife Department, with the approval of concerned authorities, has now fixed $150,000 as the baseline price for markhor hunting permits. These permits are being offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
Despite this adjustment, no hunter has yet submitted the fee, though many have expressed interest in markhor hunting. The Wildlife Department remains optimistic that the revised baseline price will attract serious bidders and ensure a successful season ahead.
The trophy hunting program in Gilgit-Baltistan is crucial in balancing conservation with community development, making it a vital initiative for preserving the region’s unique wildlife heritage.
